Stage 3- Science and Technology: Animal Adaptations

A JOURNEY TO ANTARCTICA

 

Professional Adventurer Chris Olsen takes students on "A Journey to Antarctica" with student participation, props, images and sounds combined with DVD footage. Chris gives details and amazing facts about Antarctica and it’s Wildlife.

With Chris’s first hand knowledge and 3 expeditions to Antarctica, we look at the diverse physical features and characteristics of Antarctica. 

We look at the different Animal and plant Adaptations and how penguins and seals have adapted to the harsh Antarctic environment. With Chris’s horticultural background, he explains in detail the different plant species and the importance of Algae, Phytoplankton and mosses in Antarctica, and how they survive the cold harsh environment.

We look at People and their interactions and connections with Antarctica and it’s wildlife. We look at Mawson’s Hut and it's importance, pollution and the impact on wildlife and the environment. We also look at the impact of Glacial ice melts in Antarctica..

Stage 3- Science and Technology, English ‘Animal and Plant Adaptations’

A JOURNEY TO MACQUARIE ISLAND

Professional Adventurer Chris Olsen takes students on "A Journey to Macquarie Island" with student participation, props, images and sounds, combined with DVD footage. Chris gives details and amazing facts about Macquarie Island and it’s Wildlife.

With Chris’s ‘first hand’ knowledge and 2 expeditions to Macquarie or “Macca,” Chris looks at the diverse physical features and characteristics of Macquarie Island. 

We look at Plant and Animal adaptations, structural, physical and behavioural. We compare bird beaks of penguins and other sea birds on the Island. We also look at how seals have adapted to the harsh Sub Antarctic environment. With Chris’s horticultural background, he explains in detail the different plant species including grasses, mosses, mega herbs and Kelp and their importance on the Island.

We also look at the sealers impact on Macquarie, the feral animals they left behind, and their eradication. We look at Sir Douglas Mawsons important link to ‘Macca’ and his battle to save Macquarie Island.

Stage 3- Science and Technology ‘Animal and Plant Adaptations’

A JOURNEY TO THE WILD

Adventurer and wildlife photographer Chris Olsen takes students on a “Journey to the Wild”, exploring Australia’s diverse range of plants and animals.

We look at Plant and Animal Adaptations, structural, physical and behavioural. Chris compare’s bird beaks of different bird varieties, including water birds, penguins and other unusual Australian birds. We look at how Australian mammals and marsupials, reptiles including crocodiles, and how they have adapted and evolved over time. With Chris’s horticultural background we also explore unique and interesting Australian plants, from mosses to arid desert plants, Banksia’s and other unique Australian plant species.

We look at extreme Australian environments including, arid bushland, swamps, coastal, Rainforests along with Australia’s unique and harsh Macquarie Island.

Chris sets the scene with images, sounds and plant and animal Props. Students are able to look at and touch, animal props, plants, seed pods and animal bones.

During the incursion Chris shares his vast travels around Australia and Macquarie Island, which helps make this an exciting introduction to the Australian Animal and Plant world. Chris also shares some hair-raising stories during his adventures, and his vast experience with animal photography.

 

Chris Olsen has received 10 "Frater Awards"-NSW Department Of Education, For his contribution and excellent feedback for his educational incursions at NSW Schools.
